Late September into Early October on the Wasatch Front: Harvest Season in Full Swing, Peak Color and the October Kickoff

This is the stretch of the year when the Wasatch Front leans all the way into autumn. Summer's big festivals have wrapped, the fair is in full swing, the farm festivals are at their busiest, and the aspens are about to put on the show everyone waits for. It is a two-week window that captures the whole region at its friendliest, and it is exactly the kind of warm, busy rhythm Adam and Natalie love to help newcomers discover when they are weighing a move.

Here is the late-September and early-October rundown for every community along the Wasatch Front we serve, from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The State Fair: One More Week and a Half of Fair Fun

The Utah State Fair opened today, September 10, and runs through Sunday, September 20, at the Utah State Fairpark in western Salt Lake City. The 170th annual edition brings the full tradition: carnival rides under the big sky, livestock shows from the 4-H and FFA kids who have worked all year, grandstand music, derby nights, and fair food as far as you can see.

Adam and Natalie's standing advice carries over from last week: go on a weekday afternoon if you can. Tuesday through Thursday are the lightest crowd days, and the temperature is comfortable before fall settles in. If you can only make a weekend, arrive when the gates open and do not skip the agriculture hall. The giant pumpkins genuinely never get old. The Fairpark sits right off the freeway, an easy drive from every community we serve, so this is the last full run of the year to catch it.

Sept 19-20: Heritage Weekend Across Both Counties

The third weekend of September is one of the fullest of the whole fall. Start in Historic Sandy, where the Sandy Heritage Festival horse parade rolls down Main Street at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept 19, followed by the festival at Main Street Park until 2 p.m. with live music, food trucks, vendors, pony rides, and kids' activities. It is free, family-friendly, and one of the warmest, most authentic community days on the calendar.

Meanwhile in Salt Lake City, the 9th & 9th Street Festival (Sept 19) brings live music, local artists, and food carts to one of the city's most charming tree-lined districts, and Festa Italiana (Sept 19-20) fills a weekend with Italian food, music, and booths. If you are up for a canyon drive, Sundance Harvest Market opens Sept 19 up Provo Canyon with local food and artisan vendors and some of the best aspen views in Utah County, running through Oct 10.

Harvest High Season: The Farms Are All Open

This is the week the farm festival calendar goes fully orange. The mid-September openers were the first trickle; now the big names are rolling, and every family on the Wasatch Front has a weekend pick:

And for the whole-month rhythm, add Jaker's at Harward Farms in Springville (opens Sept 26) and Lagoon's Frightmares (open since Sept 11, through Nov 8) for family-friendly daytime Halloween fun. Watch for Boo at the Zoo's 2026 dates at Hogle Zoo, which the zoo had not announced as of publishing; when they drop, those October weekends fill quickly.

Peak Fall Color Is Two Weeks Away. Plan the Route Now

Late September into the first week of October is the Wasatch Front's peak color window. Canyon maples turn deep red through mid-September, and the aspens hit their gold across the last week of September and the first week of October, with the Alpine Loop and the mountain resorts at the center of the show. The aspen around Mount Timpanogos typically reach their best right at the end of September.

Our Utah Fall Foliage 2026 guide has the best drives and timing, but Adam's short list never changes: the Alpine Loop above American Fork and Provo canyons, Big Cottonwood Canyon on a weekday, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from almost any trailhead. For a family hike, Buffalo Peak in Provo Canyon is a quick, easy out-and-back with big views of Timpanogos, and the flat Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop in Big Cottonwood Canyon is beautiful and doable with small kids in tow.

October Kicks Off: Festivals, Farms and the First Chill

October opens with a genuinely fun first week. On Saturday, Oct 3, Daybreak Oktoberfest takes over the lakefront in South Jordan with German food, live music, and local brews (a 21+ crowd, and what Adam and Natalie hear is one of the friendliest nights of the season). The same weekend, America First Field in Sandy hosts Breakaway Utah (Oct 2-3) for the EDM crowd, and Red Butte Garden holds its Fall Bonsai Show (Oct 3-4) for a quieter kind of wonder. Early in the month, Herriman steps up with Herriman Howl, the city's favorite Halloween festival.

Oct 11 is also the last day of Snowbird Oktoberfest, the 54th annual edition finishing its weekend run with free admission, the perfect excuse to ride up Little Cottonwood Canyon for the peak color. The farmers market season is winding down too: the Daybreak Farmers Market runs Saturdays through Oct 17, and the Downtown Salt Lake Farmers Market through Oct 24, so you still have a few Saturdays to stock up before the season's produce winds down.

Where to Eat This Fall: Daybreak Dining and Market Bites

If there is one thing Adam and Natalie hear from buyers over and over, it is how quickly the Daybreak dining scene became "the thing." The new downtown has changed weekend plans for the entire south valley, and fall is its best season: patios in the golden light, then a walk around the lake.

And if you are building a day around the farm festivals, turn it into one: a corn maze in the morning, a pumpkin-dinner picnic from the farmers market, and the harvest lights to cap it off. That is the Wasatch Front fall rhythm at its best.

Ski and Board Season: Buy Before the Snow

The 2026-27 ski season is on sale now, and the late-September window still matters for the wallet. The Ikon Pass is worth a look before its next price bump (full passes for new adults run around $1,399, the base pass from about $949), and the Salt Lake Ski Super Pass is expected back on sale in October, a five-resort pass that is hard to beat when you live in our communities. Resorts are publishing tentative opening targets: Snowbird aims for a Thanksgiving window (Nov 26-27), Solitude is projecting Nov 26, and Alta and Brighton follow in early December.
