September is the quiet hinge between Wasatch Front seasons. Labor Day closes out summer's festival marathon, and then the region holds its breath for a beat before everything shifts: classrooms fill up, canyon aspen begin to blush gold at elevation, pumpkin patches roll out their first orange globes, and the region's biggest genuine fair rolls into town. Utah State Fair: September 10-20

The Utah State Fair is the centerpiece of September on the Wasatch Front. This year marks the 170th annual edition of the great Utah tradition at the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City, running Thursday, September 10 through Sunday, September 20. You know the drill: carnival rides under the big sky, livestock shows from 4-H and FFA kids who have worked all year, live music on the grandstand, demolition derbies, rodeo nights, fair food as far as the eye can see (corn dogs, funnel cakes, fry bread), and a whole midway of games the kids will beg to play.

Adam and Natalie's advice: go on a weekday afternoon if you can. Tuesday through Thursday are usually the lightest crowd days, and the temperature is more comfortable before the month's heat waves pass. If you go on a weekend, arrive when the gates open and make a plan for the shows you most want to see. And do not skip the agriculture exhibits, the giant pumpkins somehow never get old.

The Fairpark sits right off the freeway in western Salt Lake City, an easy drive from every community we serve along the Wasatch Front. Whether you are coming from Daybreak, Sandy, Draper, Lehi, or Alpine, the fair is a September tradition worth circling on the calendar.

Get to the River Festival: All Month on the Jordan River

One of the most quietly wonderful things about September is the Get to the River Festival, a month-long celebration along the 50-mile Jordan River Parkway presented by the Jordan River Commission and the Jordan River Foundation. This year's 13th annual edition, themed Love Your Watershed, offers 60+ free, family-friendly events that mix outdoor recreation (paddling, biking, fishing, nature walks) with conservation projects like river cleanups and arts and cultural programming designed to connect people with the river.

The Jordan River Parkway runs right through the heart of the communities we serve: Daybreak, South Jordan, West Jordan, Murray, Sandy, and Riverton all sit along or minutes from the corridor. It is the region's great shared backyard, and September is the perfect month to discover it, the mornings are crisp, the cottonwoods are goldening, and the water is still warm enough for a paddleboard.

Look for events like the West Jordan Scavenger Hunt running all month, guided river walks, cleanup mornings, and family paddling sessions. This Week: Labor Day Weekend Is Almost Here

Before the fair arrives, there is still Labor Day weekend to enjoy. Payson Golden Onion Days runs Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7, bringing Utah's oldest Labor Day celebration (since 1929) with a grand parade, carnival midway, live music, and fireworks over Memorial Park. It is a wonderfully authentic, small-town Utah County celebration.

Meanwhile, Festival Latinoamericano celebrates Latin American culture with music, dance, food, and hands-on family activities in Orem from Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7. Monday itself brings longtime favorites: Park City Miners' Day (with the famous Running of the Balls down Main Street), Swiss Days in Midway, and the Labor Day Luau in the Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point.

And if you have not made it to the Utah Sunflower Festival at Rowley's Red Barn in Santaquin yet, today (Sept 1) is the final day of the season, three acres of golden blooms in 29 varieties, perfect for family photos, only about 45 minutes from the south valley.

Harvest Season Begins: Pumpkins, Mazes & Corn

September is when autumn's biggest family tradition starts rolling out across the Wasatch Front: pumpkin season. The first patches and mazes open in the middle of the month, and by the last weekend there is no shortage of orange.

Perched at 8,100 feet in Little Cottonwood Canyon, the Bavarian-style celebration features authentic German food and beer, live polka and brass music, family-friendly games, artisans, and those spectacular tram rides to the summit with panoramic views of the Wasatch Range.

September is the sweet spot for Oktoberfest: the aspen color begins to appear in the canyon by late month, the summer crowds are gone, and the golden light at the resort is stunning. Admission is free, making it an easy afternoon outing for families from Sandy, Draper, and the entire south valley, just a 20-minute drive up the canyon.

Community Festivals & Concerts: Sandy, Salt Lake City & Lehi

Mid-September brings a wave of community celebrations and cultural events across both counties:

• Sandy Heritage Festival (Sept 19): The south valley's historic community comes alive with a horse parade at 10 a.m. followed by a festival at Main Street Park in historic Sandy, live music, pioneer demonstrations, kids' activities, and local vendors. Free and family-friendly, it is a wonderful way to experience the character that makes Sandy such a special place to live.
• Hispanic Heritage Festival (Sept 10): A celebration of Latin American culture with music, dance, and food at America First Field in Sandy.
