This is the stretch of October Adam and Natalie always tell newcomers about: the two weeks when the valley is at its most golden, the festivals stack up one after another, and the whole region starts talking about the ski season at the dinner table. It is peak color, peak corn maze, final market Saturdays, and the first taste of Jazz basketball all at once, and it is exactly the kind of warm, busy rhythm that makes daily life along the Wasatch Front so easy to fall for.

Oktoberfest: Daybreak, Snowbird and the Breakaway Weekend

The first full weekend of October is the year's busiest gathering weekend in our corner of the valley. On Saturday, Oct 3, Daybreak Oktoberfest takes over the North Shore of Oquirrh Lake (2-6 p.m., 21+) with local breweries, German food, live music, games, and prizes, and tickets are on sale now at mydaybreak.com. Up the canyon, Snowbird's 54th annual Oktoberfest continues Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m., free admission, through its final 2026 weekend on Oct 10-11, with 50-plus beer varieties, Bavarian food, and live music under the last full aspen color.

That same weekend, Breakaway Utah (Oct 2-3) brings its two-day electronic music festival to America First Field in Sandy for an 18-plus crowd, with set times and tickets at breakawayfestival.com, and Sundance Harvest Mini Market (Oct 3, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) offers artisan vendors up Provo Canyon for a calmer, family-friendly alternative with the color show included.

Panda Fest, Scarecrows and the Family Calendar

The headline new event of the month is Panda Fest Salt Lake, Friday through Sunday, Oct 9-11 at Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City (200 E 400 S). One of the largest outdoor Asian food festivals in the country, it stacks 300-plus street-food vendors, handicraft stalls, live performances, and yes, the giant inflatable panda, all with free public admission. In Utah County, Thanksgiving Point turns October into scarecrow season: the Scarecrow Festival at Ashton Gardens runs Oct 12-17, filling 50 acres of autumn color with dozens of hand-crafted scarecrows and carved pumpkins, and the family-friendly Scarecrow 5K caps the week on Saturday morning, Oct 17. Closer to home for South Jordan families, Hocus Pocus Spooktacular lights up The Ballpark at America First Square in Daybreak on Wednesday, Oct 14 at 6 p.m., an early Halloween celebration for kids in the shadow of the new ballpark, and Mabey's Pumpkin Patch opens in South Jordan on Friday, Sept 25 and runs through Oct 31.

Jazz Basketball Is Back in the Delta Center This Month

The Utah Jazz open the season Wednesday, Oct 21 on the road at Memphis, and the home opener lands Friday, Oct 23 against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Delta Center. Before that, fans get two preseason home games close to home: Tuesday, Oct 6 vs. the Denver Nuggets (7 p.m.) and Monday, Oct 12 vs. the San Antonio Spurs (7 p.m.). Peak Color Is Here Right Now: The Best Drives and Hikes

The aspen are at their gold across the mountain benches this week, and the canyons are the center of the show through the first half of October. For family-friendly hikes with the color as a reward, Stewart Falls in Provo Canyon is a gentle out-and-back with a big waterfall at the end, and the flat Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop in Big Cottonwood Canyon is doable with small kids before the snow flies. Both beat fighting for a parking spot at the scenic pullouts, and both pair perfectly with a market morning or an Oktoberfest afternoon afterward.

Ski and Board Season Update: Pass Time Is Here

Ski season planning moves to the front burner this month, and the biggest date on the calendar is Oct 15, when the Salt Lake Ski Super Pass (Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude) goes on sale through April 1, 2027. If you ski the Cottonwoods, that is the pass to watch, and pricing is set at launch, so there is no advantage to waiting once it opens. Ikon Pass pricing is expected to step up again in October after its September increases, Epic Pass rose in early September with its next increase expected in November, and opening targets are firming around Thanksgiving weekend across the Cottonwood resorts.
