Mid-October Through Halloween on the Wasatch Front: WitchFest, Corn Mazes and the Harvest Finale

Ask Adam and Natalie what makes October special on the Wasatch Front and they will tell you it is the way the whole region leans into the season at once. The corn mazes go from "open" to "peak," the witches come out of storage at Gardner Village, every city dusts off its Halloween plans, the final farmers market Saturdays are suddenly precious, and somewhere up in the canyons the first snow dusts the peaks everyone is already planning to ski. It is a month of golden afternoons and early-dark, cozy evenings, and it is exactly the kind of rhythm newcomers fall in love with.

Here is the mid-October through Halloween rundown for every community along the Wasatch Front we serve, from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

Halloween Season Arrives Early: Gardner Village WitchFest and the Markets

If Halloween on the Wasatch Front had a starting bell, it is Gardner Village WitchFest, which opens Friday, Sept 18, and runs through Oct 31 at the historic mill village on 7800 South in West Jordan. The old brick shops fill with more than 300 witches, the scarecrow trail goes up, and the whole property becomes the friendliest kind of spooky, with witch-themed shopping, storybook strolls for little ones, and the Witchapalooza dinner theater shows running select nights through Halloween. It is a short drive from Daybreak, Herriman, and South Jordan, and it is the rare event that genuinely works for a toddler and a teenager in the same afternoon.

A few more markets round out the season's opening. The Gothic Market takes over the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy (Sept 26-27) with dark artisans, oddities, and Halloween goods, and Kuwahara's Pumpkin Patch & Thriller Park opens Sept 18 on 700 West in Draper with its daytime fall festival and the thrill side after dark. Over in Utah County, The Haunted Forest in American Fork opens Sept 18 and runs its famously intense trail into November, so the brave-hearted have their pick all October long.

Oct 3 and Oct 5: Daybreak Oktoberfest and Herriman Howl

The first week of October is the friendliest seven days on the south-valley calendar. It starts Saturday, Oct 3, with Daybreak Oktoberfest at the lake's North Shore (4732 W Fish Hook Rd) from 2 to 6 p.m., a 21+ affair with local breweries, German food, live music, games, and prizes. Adam and Natalie hear it from buyers every year: it is one of the most welcoming community nights in the whole region, a true "meet your neighbors" evening in Utah's largest master-planned community.

Two days later, on Monday, Oct 5, Herriman Howl takes over J. Lynn Crane Park & Plaza (12998 S Fort Herriman Pkwy) from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission and activities are free, and the city pulls out all the stops: a costume show-and-tell, games and activities, roaming characters, and the beloved Monsters & Minions Train Ride. It regularly draws more than 6,000 people, which tells you everything about how Herriman does community. Families from Riverton, South Jordan, and Draper make the short drive every year, and it is a wonderful window into the small-town warmth that makes this corner of Salt Lake County so special.

Corner of the Calendar: Corn Mazes at Their Absolute Peak

Mid-October is when the farm festivals hit their stride, the corn is tall and golden, and the evening haunts are running. This is the prime weekend window, so here is the state of the maze circuit across both counties:

Add Honey Haven Farm in Utah County (opens Sept 26, through Oct 31) and Frightmares at Lagoon (through Nov 8) for the full spread, and you have a maze-and-pumpkin itinerary that could fill every weekend until Halloween. Adam's standing advice: pick a windy weekday evening for the big mazes if you can, and go early on Saturdays, because the popular spots genuinely fill up at peak season.

Draper City Haunted Trail: Family-Spooky the Way It Should Be

Draper City runs one of the friendliest Halloween traditions in the south valley: the Draper City Haunted Trail, Thursday through Saturday, Oct 15-17, from 4:30 to 10 p.m. at Ballard Arena (1600 E Highland Dr). It is designed for children 15 and under, which means the scares stay playful and the night stays family-friendly. Volunteers line the path, and the whole event has the warm, neighborhood feel that makes Draper feel smaller than its tech-corridor footprint suggests. It is free, and it sells out of the good time, not the tickets, so bring a blanket and make an evening of it.

That same weekend is peak color on the east benches, so pair the trail with an afternoon on a Corner Canyon trail or the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and you have the complete Draper fall day, mountain gold by day and family spooks by night.

Farmers Markets: Two Final Saturdays, Plus Oktoberfest's Last Weekend

The farmers market season is down to its final weeks, and the harvest is at its richest. The Daybreak Farmers Market at SoDa Row runs its last Saturday on Oct 17 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), and the Downtown Salt Lake City Farmers Market at Pioneer Park follows with its last Saturday on Oct 24 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Between the two, you still have four market Saturdays to stock up on pumpkin squash, Honeycrisp apples, local honey, and the last of the peppers, and to pick up the pantry goods that carry into November.

And don't let the final Snowbird Oktoberfest weekend (Oct 10-11) slip by. The 54th annual edition closes out its run with free admission, so it is the easiest excuse all season to ride up Little Cottonwood Canyon for the last of the high-country gold. Same canyon, very different season, in just a few more weeks.

Hoops Are Back: The Jazz Tip Off a New Season at the Delta Center

Basketball season returns to the Wasatch Front in late October, and this year's opener is worth circling on the calendar. The Utah Jazz open the 2026-27 season on the road in Memphis on Wednesday, Oct 21, then host the New Orleans Pelicans in the home opener at the Delta Center on Friday, Oct 23. A Friday-night opener downtown is one of the best tickets of the year, and with the team's young core, expectations are climbing. Grab dinner before the game and you have a complete night out that anchors the whole winter entertainment calendar.

For the sports-curious home shopper, the Delta Center is a reminder of how much of the region's big-league energy sits within easy reach of the south-valley communities: a 20-minute drive from Draper and Sandy, a little more on game nights, and worth every minute of it.

Ski and Board Season: November Targets Are Getting Firm

The ski season is officially in countdown mode. Park City Mountain became the first Utah resort to commit to a date, targeting a Friday, Nov 20 opening, with Solitude also pointing at Nov 20 and Snowbird setting a tentative Nov 27 opening day. Alta and Brighton have not announced dates yet, but early December is the usual rhythm for both. A November storm is the variable, of course, but the targets give you a planning window: season passes are still on sale, and the prices only go up from here.

Halloween Night and the Week After

Halloween itself arrives on a Saturday this year, which means the neighborhoods will do what they do best. Daybreak's lake loop, historic South Jordan, Sandy's tree-lined streets, Draper's foothill cul-de-sacs, and Herriman's newer communities all turn out for trick-or-treating in force, and the cities add trunk-or-treats and community parties in the days leading up. Check your city's events page for the official stops, and if you are new to the area, this is the single best night of the year to meet your neighbors.

The season also stretches past the 31st. Frightmares at Lagoon keeps running through Nov 8, The Haunted Forest in American Fork continues into early November, and the holiday season is already popping onto the calendar: Boo at the Zoo at Hogle Zoo typically fills October weekends (2026 dates to be announced, so check hoglezoo.org), and Thanksgiving Point's Luminaria at Ashton Gardens typically opens in mid-November, with this year's dates to be announced. Halloween may be the anchor, but the Wasatch Front holiday season is already assembling behind it.

Where to Eat This October: Daybreak, the Markets, and Gardner Village

This is the season Adam and Natalie love to talk about when buyers ask what fall feels like here. The Daybreak dining scene has become the south valley's weekend anchor, and October is its best month: crisp air, golden light on the patios, and a walk around the lake after dinner.
