Ask Adam and Natalie to describe late October on the Wasatch Front and they will tell you it is the pivot point of the year. One week you are in the pumpkin patch and the next you are pulling coats out and eyeing the ski resorts' opening calendars. Halloween closes the harvest season, Thanksgiving gathers everyone around a table, and then, almost overnight, the whole region turns on its holiday lights. It is a month and a half of the warmest rhythm the valley has, and it is exactly what newcomers fall in love with when they picture daily life here.

Here is the late-October through November rundown for every community along the Wasatch Front we serve, from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The Halloween Finale: Savor the Last of the Season

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means the neighborhoods put on their best show. Daybreak's lake loop, historic South Jordan, Sandy's tree-lined streets, Draper's foothill cul-de-sacs, and Herriman's newer communities all turn out for trick-or-treating in force, and the cities add trunk-or-treats and community parties in the days leading up. If you are new to the area, this is the single best night of the year to meet your neighbors, so check your city's events page and plan your route early.

The season stretches well past the 31st for the brave. Frightmares at Lagoon keeps running through Nov 8, The Haunted Forest in American Fork continues into early November, and Hee Haw Farms in Pleasant Grove keeps its fall festival going into the first week of November, so there is still time for a final hayride and pumpkin treat before the farms put the season away. The Gardner Village WitchFest and the big corn mazes like Cornbelly's and Kuwahara's Thriller Park close out Oct 31, so their last days are the most precious of the whole autumn.

The Quiet Turn: ILLUMINATE and the Arts Warm Up November

Once Halloween passes, the calendar takes a satisfying breath before Thanksgiving, and November fills it with arts and culture. ILLUMINATE, the Utah Arts Alliance's free Light Art and Creative Tech Festival, transforms downtown Salt Lake City around Library Square and the City and County Building with glowing installations and projection art. It typically runs a weekend in mid-November (this year's dates are still to be announced, so check utaharts.org), and it is one of the most photographed nights of the whole year downtown, an evening where the whole family can wander through light and sound for free.

Over in Utah County, SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem keeps its stage warm with A Night of Broadway: Salute to Disney, Nov 12-14, a family-friendly musical revue that makes a sweet first-holiday-season outing for young kids. And on the sports side, the Utah Jazz are in full swing at the Delta Center after their Oct 23 home opener, with a month of home games ahead, a 20-minute drive from Draper and Sandy for a Friday-night downtown date.

Thanksgiving Week: Turkey Trots and Gatherings

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov 26 this year, and the Wasatch Front marks the morning with some of the friendliest races in the region. In Sandy, the Utah Human Race at the Sandy Promenade (10085 S Centennial Pkwy) starts at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning with a family-friendly 5K and 10K that benefit the Utah Food Bank, a tradition that turns a run into a giving-back moment. Just north, Salt Lake City's Cold Turkey Run offers a 6K and Kids 1K from the State Capitol area. And in Lehi, Runtastic THANKFUL at Thanksgiving Point bills itself as Utah's largest turkey trot, with a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids run starting at 7:45 a.m.

However you spend the day, Adam and Natalie love how Thanksgiving anchors community life here: morning races, afternoon tables full of family, and the first real cold snap of the season arriving right on cue. It is also the perfect moment to look ahead, because the day after Thanksgiving is when the holiday lights really begin to switch on across the valley.

The Holiday Light Season Begins

The holiday light season kicks off in mid-to-late November and it is spectacular. Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point's Ashton Gardens in Lehi returns as the state's grandest walk-through display, with millions of lights across the 50-acre gardens, a towering Christmas tree, and a light-and-music show; it typically opens around mid-November and runs into early January (2026 dates are still to be announced, and presale tickets tend to open early, so book ahead). A short drive north, Christmas in Color brings its drive-through, radio-synced light show back to two locations right in our service area, South Jordan at the USU Bastian Agricultural Center and American Fork at Mary & Art Dye Park, usually from mid-November into late December, with 2026 dates to be confirmed on the official site.

Farther north, the crown-jewel displays return for the season: Lights on Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City with its million-plus lights and nightly concerts, and ZooLights at Utah's Hogle Zoo with its glowing animated displays and light tunnel. Closer to home, the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper hosts a holiday lantern festival in late November, and the community tree lightings line up across the valley, including Herriman's Night of Lights, the Draper Tree of Life Lighting, and South Jordan's Light the Night, all typically in early December. It is a full calendar of light, and it makes the short dark afternoons feel like the coziest weeks of the year.

One booking worth circling now: Festival of Trees, the beloved Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital fundraiser at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy, runs Dec 2-5 this year and its handcrafted trees are a holiday tradition for thousands of families. Tickets historically go on sale Nov 1, so it is a smart early-November to-do if you want to make a day of it.

Ski and Board Season: November Targets Are Getting Firm

The ski season is in official countdown mode. Park City Mountain committed to a Friday, Nov 20 opening, with Solitude also pointing at Nov 20 and Alta targeting the same window. Snowbird sets a tentative Nov 26-27 opening day, and Brighton typically follows in early December. A November storm is the variable, of course, but the targets give you a real planning window, and season passes are still on sale with prices scheduled to keep climbing.
