What's Happening Now on the Wasatch Front: Oktoberfest, Peak Color and the October Rush

This is the stretch of October Adam and Natalie always tell newcomers about: the golden two weeks when the whole Wasatch Front is at its most photogenic and the calendar is completely booked. One weekend it is Oktoberfest at the lake, the next it is panda-themed street food downtown and scarecrows filling Ashton Gardens, and underneath it all the farms, the markets, and the aspen are turning on schedule.

Here is what is worth your time from this week through mid-October, in the communities we serve from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The October Kickoff: Breakaway and Daybreak Oktoberfest

The first full weekend of October is the busiest gathering weekend of the fall in our corner of the valley. On Saturday, Oct 3, Daybreak Oktoberfest takes over the North Shore of Oquirrh Lake (4732 W Fish Hook Rd, 2-6 p.m., 21+) with drinks from 10-plus local breweries, German food, live music, games, and prizes, and the first 150 guests through the gates get a commemorative item. Tickets are on sale now at mydaybreak.com, and prices step up as the date gets closer, so this is the weekend to grab them. Adam and Natalie hear from clients every year that this is one of the friendliest nights on the south-valley calendar.

Same weekend, Breakaway Utah (Oct 2-3) brings its two-day electronic music festival to America First Field in Sandy for an 18-plus crowd, with set times and tickets at breakawayfestival.com. And if the festival crowds are not your pace, Sundance Harvest Mini Market (Oct 3, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) offers artisan vendors up Provo Canyon with the peak aspen color show included.

Snowbird Oktoberfest: The Final Two Weekends

Up Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird's 54th annual Oktoberfest runs its final two weekends on Oct 3-4 and Oct 10-11, Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m., with free admission, 50-plus beer varieties, Bavarian food, and live music under the last full aspen gold of the season. It is the classic Wasatch Front fall move: ride the canyon for peak color, share a brat on the plaza, and call it a perfect Saturday. After Oct 11 the resort pivots to winter prep, so this is the last chance to catch it.

Panda Fest, Scarecrows and Herriman Howl

The headline new event of the month is Panda Fest Salt Lake, Friday through Sunday, Oct 9-11 at Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City (200 E 400 S). One of the largest outdoor Asian food festivals in the country, it stacks 300-plus street-food vendors, handicraft stalls, live performances, and the giant inflatable panda, all with free public admission. It is a wonderful, family-friendly way to eat your way around a continent in one long weekend. Details live at pandafests.com.

Closer to home, Herriman Howl returns Monday, Oct 5, 5-8 p.m. at J. Lynn Crane Park with a costume show-and-tell, games, roaming characters, and the Monsters & Minions Train Ride, a friendly kickoff to the Halloween season in the southwest valley. In Utah County, Thanksgiving Point turns Ashton Gardens into scarecrow season Oct 12-17: dozens of hand-crafted scarecrows and carved pumpkins across 50 acres of autumn color, capped by the family-friendly Scarecrow 5K on Saturday morning, Oct 17. Updates land on the Thanksgiving Point calendar. And for Daybreak families, Hocus Pocus Spooktacular lights up The Ballpark at America First Square on Wednesday, Oct 14 at 6 p.m., an early Halloween celebration for kids in the shadow of the new Salt Lake Bees ballpark.

Spooky Season Is Wide Open: Haunts, Farms and BooLights

The family Halloween calendar is fully booked from here through the end of the month. Gardner Village WitchFest in West Jordan runs daily through Oct 31 with the scarecrow trail, witch shopping, and Witchapalooza dinner shows. Hogle Zoo BooLights returns on select October nights (6:30-9:30 p.m.) with glowing pumpkins, light displays, and the family-friendly Frankenstein puppet show, and Frightmares at Lagoon runs through Nov 8 for older kids and teens. Farm picks stand at peak: Cornbelly's at Thanksgiving Point through Oct 31, Hee Haw Farms in Pleasant Grove, Honey Haven in Mapleton, Kuwahara's in Draper (patch by day, Thriller Park by night), Mabey's Pumpkin Patch in South Jordan through Oct 31, and The Kinlands in Riverton.

The south-valley highlight is the Draper City Haunted Trail, Thursday through Saturday, Oct 15-17 at Ballard Arena (1600 E Highland Dr, 4:30-10 p.m.). Designed for children 15 and under, it keeps the scares gentle and the night warm, and it is free, a genuinely neighborhood-run way to spend a fall evening in Draper.

Farmers Markets: The Final Saturdays Are Here

October is when the market season signs off, and these are the last chance Saturdays. Daybreak Farmers Market at SoDa Row (Saturdays 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) holds its final 2026 date Oct 17, with fresh produce, artisan goods, and a lake walk to finish the morning. Sandy Farmers Market at the amphitheater grounds wraps the same Saturday (9 a.m.-1 p.m.). Downtown SLC Farmers Market at Pioneer Park (Saturdays 8 a.m.-2 p.m.) is the longest-running market in the state and runs through Oct 24, with 200-plus vendors. The Draper Tuesday market at Smith Fields Park, South Jordan (final Saturday Oct 10), and Thanksgiving Point's Friday market all wind down in the next two weeks, and Lehi hosts its Night Market at Vets Park on Friday, Oct 16.

Peak Color Is Here: The Best Drives and Hikes

The aspen are at or near their gold right now across the mountain benches, and the next two weeks are the show. Our Utah Fall Foliage 2026 guide has the full timing and routes, but Adam's short list is unchanged: the Alpine Loop above American Fork on a weekday, Big Cottonwood Canyon for the Snowbird Oktoberfest lunch combo, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from almost any trailhead for a free version of the same view. For small kids, the flat Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop in Big Cottonwood is doable without a meltdown, and Buffalo Peak in Provo Canyon rewards a short climb with big Mount Timpanogos views.

Ski and Board Season: Buy Before the Snow

The 2026-27 ski season is on sale now, and this is the month to buy. The Salt Lake Ski Super Pass (Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude) goes on sale Thursday, Oct 15 at 10 a.m. and runs through April 1, 2027, and it is the steepest discount window of the year for Cottonwood canyons skiing. Opening targets are firming up: Alta points at Nov 20, with the rest of the Cottonwood resorts and Park City Mountain targeting the Thanksgiving window, and Brighton traditionally kick-starting the season. Before the snow flies, the best ski-adjacent fall move is Snowbird's Oktoberfest on its final two weekends, with the canyon at its most gold through Oct 11.
