What's Happening Now on the Wasatch Front: The Big Harvest Weekend, Ski Pass Day and the Halloween Finale

· 13 min read · By Adam & Natalie Stark
A mid-October Wasatch Front neighborhood street in golden light, with glowing jack-o'-lanterns on porches, drifting aspen leaves, and snow-dusted Oquirrh Mountains behind

Right now (Oct 15): Today is the hinge of the fall calendar. The Salt Lake Ski Super Pass goes on sale at 10 a.m., the Draper City Haunted Trail opens tonight (Oct 15-17), BOOTanical Garden After Dark begins at Red Butte, Sundance's Halloween lift rides start, and the Scarecrow Festival enters its final days at Ashton Gardens (through Oct 17). Tomorrow brings REDWEST Fest (Oct 16-17), the Lehi Night Market (Oct 16), and the Utah Renaissance Faire (Oct 16-18). Then Saturday, Oct 17 stacks the Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta at Daybreak's Oquirrh Lake, the Salt Lake Book Festival, Sandy Trunk or Treat, Bumble's Drone Spooktacular at the Bees ballpark, and the final Saturdays for the Daybreak and Sandy farmers markets. After that: Pumpkin Promenade (Oct 23-24), the Jazz home opener (Oct 23), Halloween (Oct 31), and the ski countdown. Here is the full rundown across every community we serve.

Just catching up? Our October 13 now guide previewed this exact week, and the late-October through November guide has the holiday kickoff in detail. The 2026-27 Ski Season Preview covers passes and opening targets, and the Utah Fall Foliage guide tracks the color timing.

Ask Adam and Natalie what October 15 feels like along the Wasatch Front and they will tell you it is the calmest breath of the whole season before the loudest weekend of the year. The festival previews are behind us, the pumpkins are glowing on every porch, the markets are taking their final bows, and this morning the region's best ski pass discount went live at the same moment the last big family weekends of the fall arrived. It is the week the harvest calendar and the winter calendar finally touch.

Here is what is worth your time from today through early November, in the communities we serve from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The Week Just Wrapped: Panda Fest, Oktoberfest's Finale and a Spooktacular Night

Before we look ahead, a quick salute to the ten days that just were. Panda Fest Salt Lake closed its three-day run at Library Square on Sunday, Oct 11 with 300-plus street-food vendors, handicraft stalls, and live performances, while the Avenues Street Fair celebrated its 49th year on Saturday and the Indigenous Art Market ran at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Jon Pardi packed the Maverik Center Friday night, and Snowbird's 54th Oktoberfest held its final 2026 weekend Oct 10-11 as the aspen hit full gold in Little Cottonwood. The Jazz wrapped preseason hoops Monday, Oct 12 against the Spurs, a final tune-up before the Oct 23 home opener.

And on Wednesday, Oct 14, the Hocus Pocus Spooktacular brought an early family Halloween party to The Ballpark at America First Square in Daybreak, right in the shadow of the new Bees ballpark, the warmest possible start to the season's peak week. If you missed it, Daybreak's decorated Halloween Homes Drive runs all month, a self-guided route of the community's best-decorated houses.

Today: Ski Pass Day, the Haunted Trail and the Golden Evenings

Thursday, Oct 15 is the day the fall and winter calendars meet. The Salt Lake Ski Super Pass, which bundles Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude with UTA ski bus access, opens its on-sale window at 10 a.m. per the Visit Salt Lake Super Pass page, and it is the steepest discount window of the year for Cottonwood canyons skiing. The same evening, BOOTanical Garden After Dark lights up Red Butte Garden (Oct 15-30) with an adults-friendly, after-hours take on fall, Sundance Mountain Resort begins its Halloween lift rides (select evenings through Oct 31), and the Hogle Zoo BooLights weekend starts its 6:30-9:30 p.m. glow-up (Oct 15-18, then nightly Oct 22-30).

The south-valley highlight of the weekend is the Draper City Haunted Trail, Thursday through Saturday, Oct 15-17 at Ballard Arena (1600 E Highland Dr, 4:30-10 p.m.). Designed for children 15 and under, it keeps the scares gentle and the night warm, and it is free, a genuinely neighborhood-run way to spend a fall evening in Draper. Draper is also in the middle of a lovely arts month: Little Shop of Horrors runs through Oct 31 at the Draper Historic Theatre, and up in Sandy, the family favorite Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat closes its run at Hale Centre Theatre on Oct 24.

The Big Harvest Weekend: Regatta, Book Festival and the Final Market Saturdays

Friday, Oct 16 opens the peak. REDWEST Fest brings two days of country music to the Utah State Fairpark (Oct 16-17), the newest big festival weekend on the fall calendar, and the Lehi Night Market fills Vets Park (1020 W Main, 5-9 p.m.) with vendors, food, and live music under the lights, a lovely Utah County way to close out market season. The Utah Renaissance Faire (Oct 16-18) adds jousting and artisan stalls near Mona for families who want a completely different kind of autumn outing, and the Scarecrow Festival at Ashton Gardens holds its final days through Oct 17, capped by the family-friendly Scarecrow 5K on Saturday morning.

Saturday, Oct 17 is the single best day of the fall in our corner of the valley. In Daybreak, the 15th annual Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta sends giant hollowed pumpkins out onto Oquirrh Lake (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for the year's most delightfully silly race, with a DJ, games, food trucks, and the whole community gathered on the shore. It is the kind of event Adam and Natalie tell newcomers about when they ask what makes Daybreak special: a lakefront neighborhood that turns a pumpkin patch into a boat race. Details live at mydaybreak.com/regatta. The same afternoon, Bumble's Drone Spooktacular turns the Bees ballpark at America First Square into a family Halloween party with a drone show.

Downtown, the Salt Lake Book Festival at The Gateway offers a free day of author readings, panels, and family programming, Sandy's Trunk or Treat ("Farmers Do The Monster Mash") runs noon to 3 p.m. at the Sandy Promenade, and both big farmers markets hold their final Saturdays: Daybreak Farmers Market at SoDa Row and Sandy Farmers Market at the amphitheater grounds both wrap Oct 17 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), so this is the last weekend to stock up on local honey, squash, and cider doughnuts. In Utah County, Orem's Truck-or-Treat at University Place is billed as one of the county's largest single Halloween community events, and the Provo Farmers Market keeps its Saturdays at Pioneer Park going through Oct 31 (opening at 10 a.m. now that the season has cooled).

The Halloween Home Stretch: Pumpkin Promenade, the Jazz Home Stand and the Finale

The final two weeks of the month turn the calendar from harvest to Halloween proper. Pumpkin Promenade (formerly Pumpkin Walk) returns to Bingham Creek Regional Park on Oct 23-24 in partnership with South Jordan City: a carved-pumpkin display, trick-or-treating, and live music that draws families from across the south valley, with an evening trick-or-treating stroll in Daybreak on Oct 24. The Utah Jazz regular-season home opener lands Friday, Oct 23 against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Delta Center, kicking off a full home stand: the Lakers on Sunday, Oct 25, the Grizzlies on Monday, Oct 26, and the Spurs on Wednesday, Oct 28, a perfect stretch for a downtown dinner-and-game date night. The Get Freaky Festival opens at The Great Saltair the same Friday for the 21-plus crowd.

Saturday, Oct 24 brings the downtown Salt Lake City Farmers Market's final day at Pioneer Park (8 a.m. to 2 p.m., 200-plus vendors), the Trolley Square Halloween Festival with its pumpkin drop, trick-or-treating, and kids' activities, Dia de los Muertos at Thanksgiving Point, the free Witches' Night Out evening at Gardner Village (6-9 p.m.), and the Provo Rec Halloween Festival ("Villains & Heroes") at the Provo Recreation Center. Families in the south valley have two warm city-run options near the end: the South Jordan City Hallowe'en Party on Oct 30 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Jordan Community Center, suggested $4 donation including lunch) and the Lehi Halloween Extravaganza the same evening (5-8 p.m. at the Lehi Legacy Center) with trick-or-treating, games, and food trucks. This Is The Place Heritage Park keeps its daytime, not-too-scary Little Haunts running on Oct 23-24 and 30-31 weekends for young kids who trick-or-treat through the historic village.

Halloween itself, Saturday Oct 31, is the finale for Gardner Village WitchFest, Cornbelly's (whose 2026 maze is a portrait of Dolly Parton), Wheeler Farm Pumpkin Days, Kuwahara's Thriller Park in Draper, Mabey's Pumpkin Patch in South Jordan, and the pumpkin patches across the valley, so plan the last farm visit before the gates close. If you want one more farm weekend after that, Cross E Ranch on the north edge of Salt Lake City keeps its full fall festival running through Nov 1, and Frightmares at Lagoon runs through Nov 8 for older kids and teens who want the full scream experience. The week after, the Springville Jack-O'-Lantern Float (Oct 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Bartholomew Pond) and SCERA's Tricks & Treats in Orem (Oct 29) round out the Utah County calendar.

Utah County: Markets, Mazes and Holiday Presales

Utah County keeps its own gentle rhythm through the month. The Provo Farmers Market runs Saturdays at Pioneer Park through Oct 31, and the Orem Sunset Market continues Wednesday evenings at City Center Park through Oct 28. Cornbelly's at Thanksgiving Point stays open through Oct 31 with its giant corn maze, pumpkin patch, hay rides, and the Twistical light show, and the Halloween Cruise on the Provo River (through Oct 31) turns a paddle down the river into a family-friendly pirate adventure. For a free, sensory-friendly option, the Fall-O'-Ween Festival in Provo on Oct 22 (6-9 p.m.) offers a gentle Halloween celebration designed for kids who do better with calmer crowds. Down toward Santaquin, Rowley's Red Barn Fall Festival (through Oct 30) is a working-farm favorite with a corn maze, pumpkins, and farm animals.

And the holiday season is already taking reservations in Utah County: Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point runs Nov 12 through Jan 9 at Ashton Gardens, and the ticket presale runs through Oct 31, so this month is the window to lock in the best evening slots for the 10-million-light walk. Details at thanksgivingpoint.org. Our late-October through November guide has the full holiday kickoff rundown, from the turkey trots to Christmas in Color in South Jordan and American Fork.

Ski and Snow: The Pass Window Is Open Now

The 2026-27 ski season is officially on sale. The Salt Lake Ski Super Pass (Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude) went on sale this morning at 10 a.m. and historically runs through April 1, the steepest discount window of the year for Cottonwood canyons skiing. Brighton's next price bump lands Nov 3, so the best rates are all in the next three weeks. Epic and Ikon pricing have already stepped up for the season, so the Super Pass window is the last big save of the fall.

Opening targets are firming up: Brian Head targets Nov 6 as the earliest opener in the state, Alta, Park City Mountain, and Solitude all point at Nov 20, Snowbird targets Nov 27, and Brighton and Deer Valley are projecting early December starts. Forecasters are also watching a very strong El Nino for the season, which historically favors big snow years in the Wasatch, though resorts are planning on their usual timelines either way. Our 2026-27 Ski Season Preview has the full pass-by-pass breakdown, the El Nino winter forecast digs into what the storm track could mean, and Ski Utah's opening-date tracker updates through the fall.

Thanksgiving Is Six Weeks Out: The Turkey Trots to Know

Thanksgiving lands Thursday, Nov 26 this year, and the region's turkey trots are already taking registrations. The Utah Human Race at the Sandy Promenade (10085 S Centennial Pkwy) starts at 8 a.m. with a family-friendly 5K and 10K benefiting the Utah Food Bank, with a $5 early-bird discount through Oct 31 at utahfoodbank.org. At Thanksgiving Point, Runtastic THANKFUL, billed as Utah's largest turkey trot, offers a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids run starting around 7:45 a.m. at runtasticevents.com. And downtown, the classic Cold Turkey Run offers a 6K (9 a.m., with strollers welcome) plus a Kids 1K from near the State Capitol down to Memory Grove at sportsamevents.com. All three are wonderful, community-first ways to start the day before the big meal, and they fill up as November approaches.

The Holiday Light Season Is Right Around the Corner

The dark afternoons are coming, and the valley's light season is quietly booking up. Herriman's Night of Lights is confirmed for Monday, Nov 30 (6-8:30 p.m. at Herriman City Hall and Crane Plaza), kicking off the city's holiday season. Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point opens Nov 12 and runs through Jan 9 with its presale ending Oct 31. Christmas in Color returns to South Jordan (USU Bastian Agricultural Center) and American Fork (Mary & Art Dye Park) from mid-November, with 2026 dates to be confirmed on the official site. And Festival of Trees, the beloved Primary Children's Hospital fundraiser at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy, runs Dec 2-5 this year, with tickets historically going on sale Nov 1. Mark the 30th on the calendar if you are new to Herriman: it is one of the warmest community traditions in the south valley, and exactly the kind of night Adam and Natalie love introducing newcomers to.

New on the Table: Fall Dining Openings Worth a Detour

The fall restaurant scene has been busy, and a few new openings are worth a place on your list. Culinary Dropout, the scratch-kitchen chain from the Fox Restaurant Concepts group, opened its first Utah location Oct 1 in Salt Lake City's Granary District inside the restored Pickle and Hide building, with craft cocktails and a big, loud, family-friendly room. Closer to home, Penny Ann's Cafe opened its fifth location at 7495 S Union Park Ave in Midvale, Pinkbox Doughnuts' Sandy shop is up and running, and Raising Cane's is open at 3788 W 11400 S in South Jordan. In Downtown Daybreak, keep an eye out for Naraya by Sawadee Thai and Lake Break, both marked coming soon, and Trader Joe's has been confirmed for a Daybreak site (opening date still to be announced). Our Fall Dining Guide 2026 has the full neighborhood-by-neighborhood rundown from Daybreak's restaurant row to the food trucks in Draper.

Fall Color: The Last Golden Drives

The aspen are at or near their gold right now across the mountain benches, and the next week is the sweet spot before the leaves thin. Adam's short list: the Alpine Loop above American Fork on a weekday, Big Cottonwood Canyon for a golden-hour drive, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from almost any trailhead. For small kids, the flat Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop in Big Cottonwood is doable, and Buffalo Peak in Provo Canyon rewards a short climb with big Mount Timpanogos views. If you would rather take in the color from above, Sundance's Halloween lift rides run select evenings through Oct 31. The Utah Fall Foliage guide tracks the color timing week by week.

Get out and enjoy the golden weeks. If you are exploring the region for a possible move, a Saturday at the pumpkin regatta, an afternoon at Daybreak's lake, or a golden-hour Alpine Loop drive is the truest way to feel daily life in these towns.
