What's Happening Now on the Wasatch Front: The Halloween Peak, Final Markets and the Ski Countdown
Right now (Oct 1): The October calendar is officially underway, and the next five weeks are the fullest stretch of the fall season. This weekend brings Panda Fest Salt Lake at Library Square (Oct 9-11) and the final Snowbird Oktoberfest weekend (Oct 10-11), then the Scarecrow Festival at Ashton Gardens (Oct 12-17), the Draper City Haunted Trail (Oct 15-17), and the Salt Lake Ski Super Pass going on sale Oct 15. Gardner Village WitchFest is in its peak weeks, Hogle Zoo BooLights runs four more weekends, the corn mazes are at their final stretch, and the farmers markets hit their last Saturdays: Daybreak and Sandy wrap Oct 17, downtown SLC runs through Oct 24. Here is the full rundown across every community we serve.
Just catching up? Our early-October now guide covered the Oktoberfest kickoff weekend as it happened, and the early-to-mid-October guide has the deeper run-down of Oct 3-17. The Utah Fall Foliage guide has the color timing, and the 2026-27 Ski Season Preview covers passes and opening targets.
This is the stretch of October Adam and Natalie always tell newcomers about: the weeks when the pumpkins are out on every porch, the corn mazes are at their most golden, the markets are signing off for the year, and the whole valley quietly starts talking about snow. It is the Halloween season at its peak, and underneath it the ski season is taking shape, with pass deadlines landing right in the middle of the pumpkin patch weekends.
Here is what is worth your time from this week through early November, in the communities we serve from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The Last Big Festival Weekends: Panda Fest and Scarecrow Season
The next ten days hold the final big festival weekends of the fall. Panda Fest Salt Lake, Friday through Sunday, Oct 9-11 at Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City (200 E 400 S), is one of the largest outdoor Asian food festivals in the country: 300-plus street-food vendors, handicraft stalls, live performances, and the giant inflatable panda, all with free public admission. It is a wonderful, family-friendly way to eat your way around a continent in one long weekend. Details live at pandafests.com.
In Utah County, Thanksgiving Point turns Ashton Gardens into scarecrow season Oct 12-17: dozens of hand-crafted scarecrows and carved pumpkins across 50 acres of autumn color, capped by the family-friendly Scarecrow 5K on Saturday morning, Oct 17. Updates land on the Thanksgiving Point calendar. And up Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird's 54th annual Oktoberfest runs its final 2026 weekend Oct 10-11, Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m., with free admission and live music under the last full aspen gold of the season. After that the resort pivots to winter prep, so this is the last chance to catch it.
The Halloween Season at Its Peak: WitchFest, BooLights and the Haunted Trail
The family Halloween calendar is in its busiest three weeks, and the south valley is the center of it. Gardner Village WitchFest in West Jordan runs daily through Oct 31, and October is when it peaks: the scarecrow trail, witch-themed shopping, storybook strolls, and the free Witches' Night Out evenings on Oct 10, 17, and 24 (6-9 p.m., no ticket needed). Ticketed extras like Breakfast with a Witch, Witchapalooza Dinner Theater, and the escape room fill up fast, so book ahead at gardnervillage.com.
The south-valley highlight is the Draper City Haunted Trail, Thursday through Saturday, Oct 15-17 at Ballard Arena (1600 E Highland Dr, 4:30-10 p.m.). Designed for children 15 and under, it keeps the scares gentle and the night warm, and it is free, a genuinely neighborhood-run way to spend a fall evening in Draper. In Daybreak, the community's Halloween spirit shows up in the decorated-home displays around Oquirrh Lake, and the Hocus Pocus Spooktacular at The Ballpark at America First Square (Oct 14, 6 p.m.) is the early family celebration in the shadow of the new Bees ballpark.
For a not-too-spooky after-dark outing, Hogle Zoo BooLights returns on select October nights (6:30-9:30 p.m.): glowing pumpkins, light displays, the Dr. Frankenstein puppet show, a Zombie Ranger tour, and the Witch's House. The remaining 2026 nights are Oct 10-11, 16-19, 24-26, and 30, with a 21-plus BrewLights on Oct 15. Tickets at hoglezoo.org/boolights. And Frightmares at Lagoon runs through Nov 8 for older kids and teens who want the full scream experience.
Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Patches: The Final Weeks
The farm season is in its last stretch, and this is the prime window for it: crisp air, golden fields, and the biggest pumpkins of the year. Cornbelly's at Thanksgiving Point runs through Oct 31 with its giant corn maze, pumpkin patch, hay rides, the Twistical light show, and the Insanity Point haunted trail for the brave. Wheeler Historic Farm Pumpkin Days in Murray runs through Oct 31 with free entry, a corn pit, maze, wagon and cow train rides, and the free Pumpkin Boo-tique on Oct 10 (4-8 p.m.), plus Wheeler Witch Storytime on Wednesday evenings.
Closer to home, Kuwahara's in Draper pairs its daytime pumpkin patch with the Thriller Park haunts after dark, Mabey's Pumpkin Patch in South Jordan runs through Oct 31, The Kinlands in Riverton wraps Oct 25 with free admission, and in Utah County Honey Haven Farm runs its 8-acre corn maze and barnyard zoo through Oct 31. Adam and Natalie's standing advice for families with young kids: go on a weekday morning, when the fields are quiet and the light is soft, and you will have the place nearly to yourselves.
Farmers Markets: The Last Saturdays Are Here
October is when the market season signs off, and the next two Saturdays are the last chances. Daybreak Farmers Market at SoDa Row holds its final 2026 date Oct 17 (Saturdays 9 a.m.-1 p.m.), with fresh produce, artisan goods, and a lake walk to finish the morning. Sandy Farmers Market at the amphitheater grounds wraps the same Saturday (9 a.m.-1 p.m.). Downtown SLC Farmers Market at Pioneer Park (Saturdays 8 a.m.-2 p.m.) is the longest-running market in the state and runs through Oct 24, with 200-plus vendors, and a winter market takes over at The Gateway in November. Draper's Tuesday market at Smith Fields Park runs through Oct 13, the Lehi Night Market returns Friday, Oct 16 at Vets Park (5-9 p.m.), and Provo Farmers Market shifts to 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for October and runs through Oct 31.
Turn any market run into a meal with our Fall Dining Guide 2026, from Daybreak's restaurant row to the food trucks in Draper.
Jazz Hoops Are Back: The Home Opener Is Oct 23
The Utah Jazz open the regular season on the road, and the home opener lands Friday, Oct 23 against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Delta Center. After two preseason home games earlier in the month, this is the first real taste of Jazz basketball at home, and tickets are on sale now at nba.com/jazz/schedule. It is a great pairing with a downtown dinner before tip-off.
Ski and Board Season: The Pass Window Is Open
The 2026-27 ski season is on sale now, and October is the decision month. The Salt Lake Ski Super Pass (Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude) goes on sale Thursday, Oct 15 at 10 a.m. and runs through April 1, 2027, and it is the steepest discount window of the year for Cottonwood canyons skiing. Deer Valley's pass prices step up Oct 9, and Brighton's next price bump lands Nov 3, so the best rates are all in the next month.
Opening targets are firming up: Alta, Solitude, and Park City Mountain point at Nov 20, Snowbird targets Nov 27, and Deer Valley typically opens in early December. The 2026-27 Utah Ski Season Preview has the full pass-by-pass breakdown, including Ikon and Epic timing. Before the snow flies, the last ski-adjacent fall move is Snowbird's Oktoberfest finale Oct 10-11, with the canyon at its most gold.
Fall Color: The Last Golden Weeks
The aspen are gold across the mountain benches right now, and the next two weeks are the show before the leaves come down. Our Utah Fall Foliage 2026 guide has the full timing and routes, but Adam's short list is unchanged: the Alpine Loop above American Fork on a weekday, Big Cottonwood Canyon for the Oktoberfest lunch combo, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from almost any trailhead for a free version of the same view. For small kids, the flat Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop in Big Cottonwood is doable without a meltdown.
Looking Ahead: Thanksgiving and the Holiday Kickoff
The holiday season is already taking shape behind the Halloween calendar. Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point, Utah's largest holiday light display through the 50-acre Ashton Gardens, opens its ticket presale in early October ahead of its mid-November opening. Christmas in Color returns to South Jordan and American Fork in mid-November with its drive-thru light shows synced to music. Temple Square lights turn on the day after Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving morning brings the region's turkey trots, including the long-running Utah Human Race at The Shops at South Town in Sandy and the Provo Turkey Trot. Our late-October through November guide has the full holiday kickoff rundown.
Enjoy the Peak Weeks of Fall
From Panda Fest's street-food marathon to the Scarecrow Festival, the Draper Haunted Trail, BooLights' glowing nights, and the last market Saturdays, the next five weeks are the most generous stretch of the fall calendar. Go enjoy it, because the season only gets crisper from here, and the snow will be here before you know it.
And if you are exploring the region for a possible move, an October weekend is the truest way to feel daily life in these towns: a pumpkin patch morning in South Jordan, a lakefront walk in Daybreak, a haunted trail evening in Draper, or a golden-hour Alpine Loop drive. When you are ready to take the next step, Adam and Natalie would love to help you find the perfect place to call home.
