What's Happening Now on the Wasatch Front: The First Snow Watch, the Holy War Weekend & the Holiday Lights Turn

· 15 min read · By Adam & Natalie Stark
A warm editorial photograph of an early-November evening in a Wasatch Front town square, with the first holiday lights glowing on an evergreen tree, string lights between storefronts, light snow flurries, and snow-dusted mountains in the twilight

Right now (Nov 3): The first snow watch is officially on and the holiday season is about to take over. Today: General Election Day across Utah, Teddy Swims at the Delta Center at 7 p.m., and Brighton's next season pass price bump. Nov 4: Daybreak's free New Resident Social at the Community Center. Nov 6: Brian Head targets opening day and the Aquarium Lantern Festival opens at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium. Nov 7: a historic Holy War with No. 7 BYU at No. 3 Utah (10 a.m. on ABC) and RSL Decision Day against the LA Galaxy at 5 p.m., with Disney On Ice at the Delta Center all weekend. Then the holiday turn: Luminaria opens Nov 12, the Salt Lake Family Christmas Gift Show fills the Expo Center Nov 12-14, Christmas in Color and the Downtown SLC Winter Farmers Market arrive Nov 14, the Daybreak Winter Village rink opens Nov 20, and the Thanksgiving turkey trots and Festival of Trees tickets round out the month. Here is the full rundown across every community we serve.

Just catching up? Our October 29 now guide covered the Halloween finale and the November turn, while the late-October through November guide has the holiday kickoff in detail. The 2026-27 Ski Season Preview covers passes and opening targets, and our El Nino winter forecast explainer walks through what the forecasters are actually saying.

This is the week Adam and Natalie love most on the Wasatch Front calendar. The pumpkins are packed away, the first flakes are possible on the peaks, and every town from Daybreak to Lehi is turning on its holiday lights at the same time. You can grab a pass at Brighton before today's price bump, cheer the Utes and RSL on the same Saturday, and end the week walking through ten million lights at Luminaria. It is the moment the Wasatch Front stops being a fall landscape and starts feeling like home for the winter.

Here is what is worth your time from today through the holiday kickoff, in the communities we serve from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The Week Just Wrapped: The Halloween Finale and the November Turn

Before we look ahead, a quick salute to the last seven days. Halloween delivered the friendliest finale on the calendar: Boo at the Zoo at Hogle Zoo, Halloween at the Aquarium in Draper, Halloween on Lehi Main Street, the Lehi Halloween Extravaganza and South Jordan's City Hallowe'en Party, and the last calls for WitchFest at Gardner Village, Cornbelly's, Wheeler Farm Pumpkin Days, Kuwahara's Thriller Park, and Mabey's Pumpkin Patch. Meanwhile the Provo Farmers Market and the Farm Bureau Murray market both held their final outdoor Saturdays of the season.

Then the calendar turned fast. Sunday, Nov 1, Don Omar: The Last King World Tour packed the Delta Center for a rare Sunday arena show, and the Sandy Holiday Market at Crescent Hall opened Monday for three days of early holiday shopping (Nov 2-4). If you missed the final market Saturdays, do not worry: the winter editions open indoors this month, and we have those dates below.

Right Now: Election Day, Teddy Swims & the First Snow Watch

Today, Tuesday, Nov 3, is a true Wasatch Front marker. It is General Election Day across Utah, so everyone we know is voting before the evening plans begin. It is also the night Teddy Swims brings his soulful, sold-out show (with Freak Freely) to the Delta Center at 7 p.m., and it is Brighton's next season pass price bump, so today is the last day to grab Cottonwood ski passes at the current rate. Our 2026-27 Ski Season Preview has the full pass-by-pass breakdown if you have not locked yours in.

Wednesday, Nov 4, brings one of those small community touches Adam and Natalie love pointing out to buyers who are imagining daily life in the neighborhood: the free Daybreak New Resident Social at the Daybreak Community Center (5:30 and 6:15 p.m.), a warm welcome for anyone new to the community. And Thursday, Nov 5, Outlander in Concert brings the show's sweeping score to the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, a fun night out for fans of the series.

Friday, Nov 6: The Snow Watch Begins & the Lanterns Light Up Draper

Friday, Nov 6 is the day the ski season becomes real: Brian Head targets opening day as the state's earliest ski opener, and the Wasatch resorts start firming up their own dates behind it. It is also the opening night of the Lantern Festival at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper (Nov 6 through Jan 9), where thousands of glowing lanterns transform the grounds into a winter wonderland, a newer family tradition that has quickly become one of the season's most-requested outings. The same day, Glass in the Garden opens its art show at Red Butte Garden, the Utah Symphony plays Abravanel Hall, and Alex Boye performs at the Eccles.

The Holy War Weekend: No. 7 BYU at No. 3 Utah & RSL Decision Day

Saturday, Nov 7 stacks the valley like a festival. The Utes host BYU at Rice-Eccles Stadium at 10 a.m., and for the first time in the rivalry's history both teams enter ranked in the top 10, with No. 7 BYU visiting No. 3 Utah on ABC. It is the biggest Holy War ever played, and the Wasatch Front will be watching. That evening, Real Salt Lake close the regular season in RSL Decision Day, hosting the LA Galaxy at 5 p.m. at America First Field in Sandy before the MLS Cup playoffs begin.

If the crowds are not your scene, Disney On Ice: Find Your Hero glides into the Delta Center Nov 6-8 with a hero-themed family show, and the JCC Hanukkah Market at the Salt Lake Jewish Community Center (Sunday, Nov 8, noon to 5 p.m.) gathers 40-plus local artists for an early holiday shopping pop-up just before Hanukkah begins on the evening of Nov 8. It is the rare Saturday when the whole family can split up and every single person finds something worth the trip.

Veterans Day Week: Simple Ways to Say Thanks

Veterans Day lands Wednesday, Nov 11, and the Wasatch Front marks it with a warm, community-first week. On Monday, Nov 9, Utah County's Veterans Celebration takes over the Historic County Courthouse lawn in Provo (10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ceremony at noon) with a veterans fair, the military services birthday celebration, and family activities. The Museum of Illusions in Salt Lake City offers free admission to veterans and active-duty military from Nov 11 through Nov 17, a fun, family-friendly thank-you in the heart of downtown, and the VA Salt Lake City Health Care system hosts its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Foothill campus.

It is also a big midweek for hoops: the Jazz return home Nov 10-11 against the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic at the Delta Center, the start of a solid November home stand that also includes the San Antonio Spurs (Nov 15), Phoenix Suns (Nov 20), Dallas Mavericks (Nov 22), Denver Nuggets (Nov 27), and Phoenix again (Nov 29). And the Utah Mammoth begin their longest homestand of the season on Nov 12 vs. St. Louis, with San Jose (Nov 14), Vancouver (Nov 16), Colorado (Nov 18), and Anaheim (Nov 21) all coming to the Delta Center.

The Holiday Lights Turn: Luminaria, the Gift Show & a Comic Con Weekend

The moment the Holy War whistle blows, the holiday season takes over, and this year it starts closer to home than ever. Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point's Ashton Gardens in Lehi opens Thursday, Nov 12 and runs through Jan 9, with 10 million lights across the 50-acre gardens, timed evening entry Monday through Saturday (closed Sundays, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day), and new-for-2026 experiences like Christmas on the Lake. It is the anchor of the holiday season in Utah County, and tickets sell out for the best evenings, so book early.

The same week, the Salt Lake Family Christmas Gift Show fills the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy (Nov 12-14) with 450-plus booths of holiday shopping, Santa's Village, and craft vendors, and Wasatch Comic Con brings a free, family-friendly pop-culture weekend to Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City (Nov 13-14). Adam and Natalie often tell buyers that this week is the truest preview of holiday life here: one night you are at a gift show in Sandy, the next you are watching the first lights come on in Daybreak.

Saturday, Nov 14: The Lights Come On at Once

On Saturday, Nov 14, the season switches on across the valley all at once. Christmas in Color opens its radio-synced drive-through light shows the same night in South Jordan at the USU Bastian Agricultural Center and in American Fork at Mary & Art Dye Park, and 2026 is announced as a farewell season for the South Jordan show, so catch it this year. In Daybreak, Holiday Lights at The Ballpark glows at America First Square for the season, turning the new Bees ballpark into a walk-through family destination that runs into early January alongside the Daybreak Winter Village rink (opening Nov 20).

The same day, the Downtown SLC Winter Farmers Market reopens indoors at The Leonardo (Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., running through mid-April), Lights On at The Gateway begins its nightly downtown display through New Year's Day, Lehi's Mistletoe Market sets up at The Loft studio (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and the Utah Mammoth host San Jose at 7 p.m. For local-food fans, the Provo Farmers Winter Market follows a week later at Provo Towne Centre (Saturdays from Nov 22 through Dec 20, then Jan 10 through Apr 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), so the fresh-from-the-farm haul never really stops.

Ski Season: The Countdown Comes Into Focus

As of this writing no Wasatch resort has opened yet, but the targets are sharpening by the day. Brian Head targets Nov 6 as the state's earliest opener, Alta, Park City Mountain, and Solitude all point at Nov 20, Snowbird targets Nov 27 for Thanksgiving weekend, and Sundance projects Dec 4 while Deer Valley projects Dec 5, with Brighton still to be announced but expected in early December. Note that Eagle Point will sit out the 2026-27 season after the Cottonwood Fire, so plan the southern Utah trips accordingly.

The snow forecast is the talk of every chairlift conversation in the state: forecasters are pointing to a very strong, possibly historic El Nino for 2026-27, with NOAA putting the odds north of 90 percent, though the Utah precipitation maps are genuinely mixed, so plan for a season that could start slowly in December and build through January and March. The honest version, as always, is cautious optimism, and the El Nino explainer walks through exactly what the forecasters are saying. Either way, the Salt Lake Ski Super Pass on-sale window is the moment to lock in the best Cottonwood rates before Brighton's price bump today, Nov 3, and the other resorts' tier increases through November.

Thanksgiving Week & the Holiday Kickoff

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov 26, and the Wasatch Front marks the morning with some of the friendliest races in the region. The Utah Human Race starts at 8 a.m. at the Sandy Promenade (10085 S Centennial Pkwy) with a family-friendly 5K and 10K benefiting the Utah Food Bank, strollers welcome and kids in wagons racing free. Runtastic THANKFUL, billed as Utah's largest turkey trot, takes off at 7:45 a.m. at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi with a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids run. And Salt Lake City's Cold Turkey Run winds through City Creek Canyon near the Capitol. Register soon: the Utah Human Race's early-bird discount has closed, and THANKFUL's fields fill fast.

The day after Thanksgiving, the holiday machine goes full throttle. ZooLights opens at Hogle Zoo on Saturday, Nov 28, running select nights through Jan 4. Temple Square's Christmas concerts open Nov 27-28, with Ring Out with Joy, the Bells at Temple Square handbell concert, already on the calendar for Nov 20-21 at the Tabernacle. A Christmas Carol opens its 42nd annual run at Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy on Nov 27 (through Dec 26), the Wheeler Farm Holiday Market brings 50-plus local vendors to Murray (Nov 27-29, free admission), and South Jordan's free Candy Windows display lights up the shop windows by City Hall from Nov 27 through Jan 1.

Then the town squares take over. West Jordan's Christmas in the Village kicks off Nov 21, Draper's Tree Lighting at Draper Park flips on more than three million lights Monday, Nov 30 (6-8 p.m., free, with Santa), and Herriman's Night of Lights at City Hall and Crane Park Plaza brings Santa, music, games, crafts, and ice skating on Sunday, Nov 30 (6-8:30 p.m.). And for a full family day out in Sandy, the 56th Festival of Trees fills the Mountain America Expo Center Dec 1-5 (public days Dec 2-5) benefiting Primary Children's Hospital, and tickets are on sale now with early-bird pricing through Black Friday.

Cozy Season: Where the Warm Evenings Are

When the clocks fall back and the cold arrives, the south valley's dining scene turns cozy, and Daybreak's restaurant row is the weekend anchor all season long. A lakeside walk in the early dark followed by a warm meal is the quintessential Daybreak evening, and it is the kind of daily-life detail Adam and Natalie love to walk buyers through when they are imagining a move. For the full list of where to eat from Daybreak to Lehi this season, our Fall Dining Guide 2026 has the complete roundup of warm bowls, big shared tables, and slow coffee mornings, and it holds up beautifully into the holidays.

Get out and enjoy the first snow watch and the slow glow-up of the holiday season. If you are exploring the region for a possible move, a Tuesday night walk through Daybreak's lakefront in the early dark, a Saturday at the biggest Holy War ever played, an evening of ice skating at the Daybreak Winter Village, or a drive through Christmas in Color is the truest way to feel daily life in these towns.
