What's Happening Now on the Wasatch Front: The Snow Watch, the Holy War & the Holiday Lights Turn On

· 13 min read · By Adam & Natalie Stark
An early-November evening at a Wasatch Front community town square, with warm string lights, a small outdoor ice rink, and snow-dusted peaks at dusk

Right now (Nov 5): The first snow watch is real and the holiday season is turning on one switch at a time. Tonight: Outlander in Concert at the Eccles Theater. Nov 6: Brian Head opens its 2026-27 season and the Aquarium Lantern Festival lights up the Draper aquarium, plus Aida Cuevas at UVU's Noorda Center and Glass in the Garden at Red Butte. Nov 7: a top-10 Holy War, No. 7 BYU at No. 3 Utah (10 a.m. on ABC), RSL Decision Day vs. the LA Galaxy (5 p.m.), and Disney On Ice at the Delta Center. Then it accelerates: Veterans Day Nov 11, Luminaria opens Nov 12, the Salt Lake Winter Farmers Market moves indoors Nov 14, Magical Lantern Nights and the Daybreak Winter Village rink arrive Nov 20, ILLUMINATE lands Nov 21-22, and the Thanksgiving turkey trots and town tree lightings close out the month. Here is the full rundown across every community we serve.

Just catching up? Our November 3 now guide covered Election Day and the first snow watch, while the late-October through November guide has the broader holiday kickoff. The 2026-27 Ski Season Preview covers passes and opening targets, and our El Nino winter forecast explainer walks through what the forecasters are actually saying.

This is the week the Wasatch Front changes clothes. The last leaves are coming off the cottonwoods, the snow guns have been running on the upper mountain, the outdoor farmers markets have handed off to their indoor winter editions, and every town from Daybreak to Lehi is stringing lights for the season. It is also one of the best sports weekends of the year, with the state's biggest rivalry game and Real Salt Lake closing out its regular season on the same Saturday. Adam and Natalie talk about this stretch constantly with families who are weighing a move, because it is the two weeks that show you what winter life here actually feels like: you can ski in the morning, shop a holiday market in the afternoon, and be home for dinner.

Here is what is worth your time from today through the second week of December, in the communities we serve from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

The Week Just Wrapped: Election Night and the Last Open-Air Markets

Before we look ahead, a quick nod to the last few days. Tuesday, Nov 3, was General Election Day across Utah, and the Delta Center hosted a packed Teddy Swims show that evening. Wednesday, Nov 4, brought the free Daybreak New Resident Social at the Daybreak Community Center, one of those small neighborhood rituals that Adam and Natalie always point out to buyers who are trying to picture daily life in a new community. If you missed it, the Daybreak resident events calendar runs all winter.

The bigger shift was quieter. The Provo Farmers Market and the Farm Bureau Murray market both closed their outdoor Saturday seasons, which means the fresh-food calendar has moved indoors for the winter. We have the winter market dates below, and they start in just over a week.

This Weekend: Opening Day, Lanterns & the Biggest Game in the State

Friday, Nov 6, is the day winter becomes official. Brian Head Resort opens the 2026-27 Utah ski season, the earliest opener in the state and a genuine southern Utah tradition. The same night, the Aquarium Lantern Festival opens at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper (nightly 5:30-10 p.m., through Jan 9), where thousands of glowing handmade lanterns turn the grounds into a walk-through light garden. It has quietly become one of the most-requested family outings in the south valley, and it is a ten-minute drive from most of Draper and South Jordan.

Friday also brings Glass in the Garden at Red Butte Garden, and in Utah County, Aida Cuevas, the Queen of Mariachi, performs at the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts at UVU in Orem at 7:30 p.m. If you have never seen a mariachi concert in a proper hall, this is the one.

Then Saturday, Nov 7, stacks the whole state into one afternoon. The Utes host BYU at Rice-Eccles Stadium at 10 a.m. on ABC, and both teams come in ranked in the top 10, which is the kind of game this rivalry has never had before. That evening, Real Salt Lake closes the regular season with RSL Decision Day against the LA Galaxy at 5 p.m. at America First Field in Sandy, right before the MLS Cup playoffs begin. Around all of it, Disney On Ice: Find Your Hero runs at the Delta Center Nov 6-8, and the JCC Hanukkah Market at the Salt Lake Jewish Community Center (Sunday, Nov 8, noon to 5 p.m.) gathers local artists for an early holiday shopping pop-up just before Hanukkah begins that evening.

Veterans Day Week: Simple Ways to Say Thank You

Veterans Day lands Wednesday, Nov 11, and the Wasatch Front marks it in the way we like best: locally and warmly. On Monday, Nov 9, the Utah County Veterans Celebration takes over the Historic Utah County Courthouse in Provo (10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a ceremony at noon), including a veterans resource fair, the military services birthday celebration, and family activities. The Museum of Illusions in downtown Salt Lake City offers free admission to veterans and active-duty military from Nov 11 through Nov 17, which makes for an easy, genuinely fun family outing in the middle of the week. The VA Salt Lake City Health Care system also holds its annual ceremony at the Foothill campus.

Hoops fills the rest of the week. The Jazz are home Nov 10 against the Miami Heat and Nov 11 against the Orlando Magic, both at 7 p.m., then host the San Antonio Spurs on Nov 15 and the Phoenix Suns on Nov 20 at 7:30 p.m. The rest of November is mostly on the road, so those four dates are the ones to circle. Check the Delta Center calendar for Utah Mammoth hockey dates, which fill in around the basketball schedule all month.

The Markets Turn Indoors: Winter Farmers Markets & Holiday Pop-Ups

One of the things Adam and Natalie hear most from people relocating here is surprise at how long the local food season actually lasts. It does not end in October. It just moves inside.

On Saturday, Nov 14, the Salt Lake Winter Farmers Market reopens indoors at The Leonardo (209 E 500 S) every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., running into April. A week later, on Saturday, Nov 21, the Provo Farmers Winter Market opens at Provo Towne Centre (10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays through Dec 19), and it returns after the holidays in January. In between there are more holiday pop-ups than any family can reasonably attend: the Salt Lake Family Christmas Gift Show at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy (Nov 12-14), Wasatch Comic Con at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City (Nov 13-14, free), and the Holy Cow Christmas Boutique at the Lindon Community Center (Nov 17-21, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.), a Utah County institution for handmade gifts.

In December the calendar keeps going with the Orem Holiday Market (Nov 30, Dec 5 and Dec 19, 4 to 8 p.m., run by Sunset Farmers Markets), the Draper Holiday Market at Draper City Park (Dec 4-5), the Daybreak Winter Market at the Daybreak Community Center (Dec 11-12), and the Craft Lake City Holiday Market at the Mountain America Expo Center (Dec 12).

The Lights Turn On: Luminaria, Lantern Nights & the Winter Village

The holiday light season along the Wasatch Front now starts in mid-November, and this year there are more ways to see it than ever.

Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point's Ashton Gardens in Lehi opens Thursday, Nov 12 and runs through Jan 9, with millions of lights spread across 50 acres, timed evening entry Monday through Saturday, and the Fire and Ice show back for the season. It is closed Sundays, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, and the best evenings sell out, so book early. This is the anchor of the holiday season in Utah County, and it is the one Adam and Natalie get the most questions about from families moving to Lehi and Saratoga Springs.

In Salt Lake County, the same week fills in fast. Christmas in Color opens its drive-through, radio-synced light shows on Nov 14 in South Jordan (at the USU Bastian Agricultural Center) and American Fork, and 2026 is announced as the farewell season for the South Jordan show, so this is the year to catch it. Holiday Lights at The Ballpark at America First Square in Daybreak also opens Nov 14, with a walk-through light display plus mini golf and the Polar Express train, nightly 5 to 10 p.m. through Jan 3 and closed Christmas Day. Lights On at The Gateway begins its downtown display the same night.

Friday, Nov 20, is the busiest light night of the month. The Daybreak Winter Village ice rink opens at America First Square and runs through Feb 15, which means you can skate outdoors in a swim of holiday lights and then walk to dinner. The same night, Magical Lantern Nights opens at the Utah State Fairgrounds in Salt Lake City (through Jan 10, Sundays through Thursdays 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays until 10 p.m.), and the Tracy Aviary LightWalk begins at Liberty Park.

After Thanksgiving the classics return: ZooLights at Hogle Zoo on Nov 27 (select nights, 5:30 to 9 p.m., through early January), and the Christmas Lights on Temple Square turning on Nov 27 as well, nightly 5 to 10 p.m. through Jan 1, with free opening concerts in the Tabernacle Nov 27-28. And on the weekend of Nov 21-22, the free ILLUMINATE festival brings art, light, and technology installations into downtown Salt Lake City for two evenings. It is free, it is walkable, and it is the kind of thing teenagers actually want to go to.

Ski Season: The Opening Dates Are Set

The 2026-27 Utah ski season is now a schedule instead of a rumor. Brian Head opens Nov 6 as the state's earliest resort. Alta, Park City Mountain, and Solitude all target Nov 20. Snowbird targets Nov 27 for Thanksgiving weekend. Deer Valley opens Dec 5. And Brighton has not yet posted its date, though the expectation is early December. Note that Eagle Point will sit out the entire season after the Cottonwood Fire, so plan southern Utah trips around Brian Head instead.

The forecast conversation is the same one happening on every chairlift in the state: a strong, possibly historic El Nino pattern for 2026-27, with NOAA odds north of 90 percent, but genuinely mixed precipitation signals for Utah. That usually means a slow build in December and a stronger second half. Our El Nino explainer covers what the forecasters are actually saying, and the 2026-27 Ski Season Preview has the pass and pricing breakdown. If you are buying passes, buy now: the tier pricing climbs all the way to opening day.

Thanksgiving Morning: The Turkey Trots

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov 26, and the Wasatch Front has turned the morning into its own tradition. Pick your community:

Utah Human Race · Sandy

8 a.m. at the Sandy Promenade (10085 S Centennial Pkwy). 5K and 10K benefiting the Utah Food Bank, strollers welcome.

Runtastic THANKFUL · Lehi

7:45 a.m. at Thanksgiving Point. Half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a kids half mile along the Jordan River Trail.

Eagle Mountain Turkey Trot

8 to 10 a.m. at Cory B. Wride Memorial Park. An untimed 3.1-mile course open to runners, walkers, bikes, and strollers.

Saratoga Springs Community Turkey Trot

8:30 a.m. from the Saratoga Springs Marina parking lot. A friendly two-mile run and walk.

Earn Your Turkey Run · Orem

8 a.m. at the Orem Family Fitness Center. Four-mile run, two-mile walk, and kids races.

Hobble Before You Gobble · Springville

7:45 a.m. with 10K, 5K, and a fun run, for anyone in the south Utah County corner.

South Jordan gets a head start the weekend before with the SoJo Turkey Run on Saturday, Nov 21, which is a smart pick if you want your holiday morning to stay slow. Register early on all of these. The Thanksgiving races fill up faster than any other running event on the calendar.

Town Tree Lightings & the Holiday Close of November

The last two days of November are when the small towns take over. On Monday, Nov 30, Draper's Tree Lighting flips on more than three million lights at Draper City Park from 6 to 8 p.m., free, with Santa and hot chocolate, and the same evening Herriman's Night of Lights fills J. Lynn Crane Park and Plaza (6 to 8:30 p.m.) with Santa and Mrs. Claus, music, games, crafts, and ice skating. If your family has not picked a tradition yet, these two are the warmest ones on the calendar and they are 20 minutes apart.

Herriman's Ice Ribbon, the free outdoor looping skate track at Crane Plaza, opens for the season around the start of December, weather permitting, with reservations opening in early November. South Jordan's Light the Night follows on Friday, Dec 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Towne Center Drive, with Santa, cookies, hot chocolate, an ice sculpture, the famous Candy Windows (open Nov 27 through Jan 1), and a winter market. Sandy's annual Light up the Cairns celebration at City Hall has not posted its December date yet, so watch the city calendar.

For the big-ticket holiday outings, the Festival of Trees fills the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy with public days Dec 2-5, benefiting Primary Children's Hospital, and it remains the single best holiday afternoon in Salt Lake County. A Christmas Carol opens at Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy on Nov 27 and runs through Dec 26. And the Wheeler Farm Holiday Market in Murray brings local vendors to the farm over Thanksgiving weekend. In Herriman, the Herriman Jazz Project Christmas Concert plays City Hall on Dec 7 at 7 p.m., which is exactly the kind of small-town evening we love recommending.

Cozy Season: New Tables & Warm Evenings

The dining story this fall has been the new openings, and a few of them are worth a drive. Culinary Dropout opened Utah's first location in early October in Salt Lake City's Granary District, inside the restored Pickle and Hide building, and it has been the reservation everyone is chasing. In Utah County, Bonrue Bakery opened its first Utah County shop on North Canyon Road in Provo in October, a short walk from LaVell Edwards Stadium, with European pastries and fresh bread. Kitchen 88 brought its fine-dining-in-a-fast-casual-setting menu to Provo as its third location, and Dough Lady added a Lehi outpost for anyone who has been driving to Salt Lake for cinnamon rolls.

Closer to home, the winter rhythm takes over: a lakeside walk in the early dark at Daybreak followed by a warm bowl on restaurant row, a slow Saturday coffee before the farmers market, a long table in Draper or Sandy on a cold night. For the full neighborhood-by-neighborhood list from Daybreak to Lehi, our Fall Dining Guide 2026 still holds up beautifully into the holidays. As always, check hours before you go, especially on Sundays.

Family-Friendly Rain Plans for the Cold Weeks

Once the outdoor markets close and the light shows do not start until 5 p.m., every parent in the valley needs a Saturday morning plan. The reliable ones: Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, Discovery Gateway Children's Museum downtown, the Natural History Museum of Utah up at the University of Utah, and the Clark Planetarium, which has a free exhibit hall and IMAX dome shows. In Utah County, Thanksgiving Point is a whole day on its own with the Museum of Ancient Life, the Museum of Natural Curiosity, and the Butterfly Biosphere, and Provo Beach at The Shops at Riverwoods keeps the indoor surfing and ropes course going all winter. BYU's museums in Provo are free, which is hard to beat on a cold afternoon.

Get out and enjoy this in-between season. It is the stretch where the Wasatch Front feels most like itself: a ranked rivalry game on Saturday, lanterns in Draper that night, a winter market on the way home, and the first turns on the mountain a couple of weeks later. If you are exploring the region for a possible move, a skate at the Daybreak Winter Village, a walk through Luminaria, or a Saturday spent at a town tree lighting tells you more about daily life here than any market report.
