What's Happening Now on the Wasatch Front: Pumpkin Regatta, Festival Weekends and the Ski Countdown

· 11 min read · By Adam & Natalie Stark
Giant hollowed pumpkins floating as boats on a calm lake at a golden-hour autumn festival, with string lights, harvest stalls, and the Oquirrh Mountains behind

Right now (Oct 6): The festival run is officially underway, and the next six weeks are the fullest stretch of the fall season. This week brings Herriman's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Tuscany Park (Oct 7), the Jazz preseason home opener against Denver (Oct 7), the final days of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Eccles Theater, and the last Epic Pass price step of the season. Then the big three weekends: Panda Fest Salt Lake and the Avenues Street Fair (Oct 9-11), the Scarecrow Festival and REDWEST Fest (Oct 12-17), and the Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta at Daybreak's Oquirrh Lake with the final farmers market Saturdays (Oct 17). Here is the full rundown across every community we serve.

Just catching up? Our mid-October preview laid out the full Oct 9 through Nov 8 calendar, and the early-October now guide covered the Oktoberfest kickoff weekend as it happened. The Utah Fall Foliage guide has the color timing, and the 2026-27 Ski Season Preview covers passes and opening targets.

Ask Adam and Natalie what makes this exact week special and they will tell you it is the hinge of the fall: the pumpkins are out on every porch, the aspen are at their gold on the benches, the markets are signing off for the year, and the whole valley quietly starts talking about snow. It is the week the Halloween calendar stops being a preview and becomes the main event, with a pumpkin regatta on Daybreak's lake, a country festival at the State Fairpark, and the final pass deadlines of the ski season landing right in the middle of it.

Here is what is worth your time from this week through Thanksgiving, in the communities we serve from Daybreak and South Jordan to Sandy, Draper, Herriman, Lehi, and beyond.

This Week: Not-So-Scary Halloween, Jazz Preseason and a Final Pass Deadline

The next two days hold three small but lovely things. On Wednesday, Oct 7, Herriman's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes over Tuscany Park (10 a.m. to noon) as a free, gentle playdate in the park for the littlest ghosts and goblins, the perfect warm-up for the bigger Howl next year. The same evening, the Utah Jazz tip off their preseason home schedule against the Denver Nuggets at the Delta Center (7 p.m.), an affordable, family-friendly night of basketball that pairs well with a downtown dinner. And if you have been eyeing an Epic Pass for Park City, note that Oct 7 is the final price step of the season, so today is the last day to buy at the current rate.

Downtown, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is in its final week at the Eccles Theater through Sunday, Oct 11, a two-part theatrical event that has been filling houses all month. And up in Big Cottonwood Canyon, the aspen are at peak gold right now, which means the Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop and the Alpine Loop are both worth a weekday afternoon while the color holds.

The Big Festival Weekend: Panda Fest, the Avenues Street Fair and Giant Pumpkins

Friday through Sunday, Oct 9-11, is the busiest festival weekend of the month. Panda Fest Salt Lake returns to Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City (200 E 400 S) for three days of Asian street food and culture: 300-plus vendors, handicraft stalls, live performances, and the famous giant inflatable panda, all with free public admission. Details live at pandafests.com.

Saturday, Oct 10 stacks three more can't-miss stops. The Avenues Street Fair, now in its 49th year, fills First Avenue with artists, food, live music, and kids' activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Indigenous Art Market at the Natural History Museum of Utah (Oct 10-12) brings Native artists and makers together for a weekend of craft and culture. And at The Gateway on Sunday, Oct 11, Giant Pumpkinpalooza celebrates the season's biggest gourds with carving demos and family fun downtown. Up Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird's 54th annual Oktoberfest runs its final 2026 weekend Oct 10-11 (noon to 6 p.m., free admission), and the Sundance Harvest Mini Market holds its last Saturday of the season the same day, with the peak aspen color show included.

Mid-October: Scarecrows, REDWEST and the Draper Haunted Trail

The second full week of October brings the scarecrow season to Utah County and a brand-new country festival to Salt Lake. Thanksgiving Point turns Ashton Gardens into scarecrow season Oct 12-17: dozens of hand-crafted scarecrows and carved pumpkins across 50 acres of autumn color, capped by the family-friendly Scarecrow 5K on Saturday morning, Oct 17. Updates land on the Thanksgiving Point calendar.

In Salt Lake City, REDWEST Fest brings two days of country music to the Utah State Fairpark on Oct 16-17, and BOOTanical Garden After Dark lights up Red Butte Garden Oct 15-30 with an adults-friendly, after-hours take on fall color. Closer to home, the south-valley highlight is the Draper City Haunted Trail, Thursday through Saturday, Oct 15-17 at Ballard Arena (1600 E Highland Dr, 4:30-10 p.m.). Designed for children 15 and under, it keeps the scares gentle and the night warm, and it is free, a genuinely neighborhood-run way to spend a fall evening in Draper. In Daybreak, the Hocus Pocus Spooktacular at The Ballpark at America First Square (Oct 14, 6 p.m.) is the early family celebration in the shadow of the new Bees ballpark, and Lehi holds its Night Market at Vets Park on Friday, Oct 16 (5-9 p.m.) to close out market season in Utah County.

The Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta and the Final Market Saturdays

Saturday, Oct 17 is the single best day of the fall in our corner of the valley. In Daybreak, the Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta sends giant hollowed pumpkins out onto Oquirrh Lake (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for the year's most delightfully silly race, with a DJ, games, and the whole community gathered on the shore. It is the kind of event Adam and Natalie tell newcomers about when they ask what makes Daybreak special: a lakefront neighborhood that turns a pumpkin patch into a boat race.

The same day, Sandy's Trunk or Treat, themed "Farmers Do The Monster Mash," runs noon to 3 p.m. at the Sandy Promenade, and both big farmers markets hold their final Saturdays: Daybreak Farmers Market at SoDa Row and Sandy Farmers Market at the amphitheater grounds both wrap Oct 17 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), so this is the last weekend to stock up on local honey, squash, and cider doughnuts. The Scarecrow 5K at Ashton Gardens rounds out the morning for runners in Utah County.

Late October: Pumpkin Promenade, Get Freaky and the Jazz Home Opener

The final stretch of the month is when the calendar turns from harvest to Halloween proper. Pumpkin Promenade (formerly Pumpkin Walk) returns to Bingham Creek Regional Park on Oct 23-24 in partnership with South Jordan City: a carved-pumpkin display, trick-or-treating, and live music that draws families from across the south valley. The Utah Jazz regular-season home opener lands Friday, Oct 23 against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Delta Center, and the Get Freaky Festival opens its run at The Great Saltair the same night for the 21-plus crowd.

Saturday, Oct 24 brings the downtown Salt Lake City Farmers Market's final day at Pioneer Park (8 a.m. to 2 p.m., 200-plus vendors) and the last free Witches' Night Out evening at Gardner Village (6-9 p.m.). Halloween itself, Saturday Oct 31, is the finale for Gardner Village WitchFest, Cornbelly's, Wheeler Farm Pumpkin Days, Kuwahara's Thriller Park in Draper, Mabey's Pumpkin Patch in South Jordan, and the pumpkin patches across the valley, so plan the last farm visit before the gates close.

Utah County: Farmers Markets, Mazes and a Halloween Cruise

Utah County keeps its own gentle rhythm through the month. The Provo Farmers Market runs Saturdays at Pioneer Park (9 a.m. to 2 p.m., opening at 10 a.m. now that the season has cooled), and the Orem Sunset Market continues Wednesday evenings at City Center Park. Cornbelly's at Thanksgiving Point stays open through Oct 31 with its top-ten corn maze and 60-plus attractions, and the Halloween Cruise on the Provo River (Oct 5-31) turns a paddle down the river into a family-friendly pirate adventure. For a free, sensory-friendly option, the Fall-O'-Ween Festival in Provo on Oct 22 (6-9 p.m.) offers a gentle Halloween celebration designed for kids who do better with calmer crowds, and the Utah Renaissance Faire (Oct 16-18) brings jousting and artisan stalls to the hills near Mona for a completely different kind of autumn outing.

The Ski Countdown: Buy Before the Snow

The 2026-27 ski season is taking shape behind the Halloween calendar. Epic Pass prices take their final step up Oct 7, so Park City skiers should buy before the bump. The Salt Lake Ski Super Pass, which bundles Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude with UTA ski bus access, opens its on-sale window Oct 15 per the Visit Salt Lake Super Pass page, and sales historically run through April 1. Snowbird's lowest-price window closed Sept 30, so its passes have stepped up, while the Alta-Bird pass and Ikon options remain on sale.

Opening targets are firming up: Alta, Park City Mountain, and Solitude all point at Nov 20, Snowbird targets Nov 27, and Brighton traditionally kick-starts the season, with OnTheSnow projecting early December if the snow comes late. Our 2026-27 Ski Season Preview has the full pass-by-pass breakdown, and Ski Utah's opening-date tracker updates through the fall.

Thanksgiving Is Six Weeks Out: The Turkey Trots to Know

Thanksgiving lands Thursday, Nov 26 this year, and the region's two signature turkey trots are already taking registrations. The Utah Human Race at the Sandy Promenade (10085 S Centennial Pkwy) starts at 8 a.m. with a family-friendly 5K and 10K benefiting the Utah Food Bank, with a $5 early-bird discount through Oct 31 at utahfoodbank.org. At Thanksgiving Point, Runtastic THANKFUL, billed as Utah's largest turkey trot, offers a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids run starting at 7:45 a.m. at runtasticevents.com. Our late-October through November guide has the full holiday kickoff rundown, from Luminaria ticket presales to Christmas in Color in South Jordan and American Fork.

Fall Color: The Last Golden Drives

The aspen are at or near their gold right now across the mountain benches, and the next ten days are the sweet spot. Adam's short list: the Alpine Loop above American Fork on a weekday, Big Cottonwood Canyon for the Snowbird Oktoberfest lunch combo, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from almost any trailhead. For small kids, the flat Silver Lake to Twin Lakes loop in Big Cottonwood is doable, and Buffalo Peak in Provo Canyon rewards a short climb with big Mount Timpanogos views. The Utah Fall Foliage guide tracks the color timing week by week.

Get out and enjoy the golden weeks. If you are exploring the region for a possible move, a Saturday at the pumpkin regatta, an afternoon at Daybreak's lake, or a golden-hour Alpine Loop drive is the truest way to feel daily life in these towns.
